Human Subjects/IRB Activity

The graph below gives a glimpse into the amount of human subjects research activity conducted at UTK from June 2010 to Junel 2011. These numbers continue to grow each year. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is committed to quality human subjects research and the protection of humans involved in research conducted at UTK.

Of the 346 new Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols received from June 2010 – June 2011, 321 were reviewed and approved.

During this timeframe, 266 of the 346 IRB protocols received an Expedited approval by the IRB appointed representative (Compliance Officer, or the Chair).

Currently 12 protocols are still pending, waiting for receipt of additional materials in order to receive full approval.  These studies represent various departments and were reviewed between August, 2010 and May, 2011.

Over this time period, 55 of the 346 IRB protocols were reviewed by the convened IRB committee.

  • IRB reviewed from the College Nursing at the December 2010 meeting with PI response to be received in the Compliance Office by February 2011.  Email reminder was sent during July 2011.  There has been no response to date.
  • IRB reviewed from Psychology at the June 2011 received conditional approval pending receipt of additional materials.
  • One protocol from Social Work reviewed by the IRB during January and again in February 2011, received conditional approval in April 2011 pending receipt of additional materials. Requested materials have not been received by the Compliance Office to date.

The 496 continuing reviews over this timeframe represent those protocols already approved with the one-year approval expiring according to the month of original approval. Response to continuing reviews has improved since incorporating email distribution of the renewal form as opposed to campus or regular mail.
